STYLE | Class Meets Comfort: Adidas Stan Smith Premium White/Black Review
The legendary Stan Smith is back, and it's fresher than ever.
The brief two-year interlude that Adidas initiated back in 2011 when it announced the termination of the production of the Stan Smith sneakers now seemed to be a brilliant move rather than an unnecessary risk. The two-year gap helped transformed the Stan Smith’s into a generic trademark, making it synonymous with sneakers the same way Levi’s identified with jeans.
In hindsight, it’s easy to see why. The original Adidas Stan Smith is an essential pair of sneakers that everyone seemed to have sported during its heyday in the 80s and 90s. A pair of Stans can be seen everywhere, from the streets to the the courts. The arrival of the new millennium, though, gradually saw the iconic sneakers being worn by influencers in the fashion industry, thereby increasing its appeal even more.
With the return of the Stans in 2014, Adidas has shown great restraint in manufacturing versions of the classic sneaker. The colour versions of the original are subtle and additional embellishments are very limited. The pair we have now for review is one of the newest versions, the Adidas Stan Smith Premium in White and Black.
With the Stan Smith’s, less is definitely more.
The shoes’ simple design, clean white colour and the minimal branding all serves to highlight the timelessness of the sneaker. However, in lieu of the classic green colourway, there’s now a black colourway for the ever so popular sneaker.
Branding is still subtle though. There is the Adidas logo and Stan Smith on the heel tab, another Stan Smith text down the side in gold foil, and the signed portrait on the tongue in black.
The white tumbled leather contrasts nicely with the black accents, and the vintage look also gives the sneaker the usual agelessness of the Stan Smith lineup, while at the same time setting it apart from the regular Stan Smith’s.
Classy and clean. These are the first two things that come to mind upon the initial viewing of the black and white Stan Smith’s.
Unlike the other variations of the Stan Smith, this Stan Smith features a tumbled leather upper giving it that premium feel.
The shoes fit well and snugly for feet of any size. The shoes do not have as much ventilation as other Adidas sneakers but they are still comfortable even in warm weather.
The insole features a visa terry sock liner which is soft and fuzzy, a bit like the coating of a tennis ball, while the outsole is made of tonal rubber for grip. The grip will ensure that you don’t slip on wet surfaces which is always great. For light activities, the Stan Smith will do well but strenuous physical activities are not suitable for the shoe.
The Stan Smith has proven to be ultimately timeless and is no doubt one of the best women’s sneakers for 2017, and possibly till the end of time. The sneakers’ massive popularity speaks for itself, and it won't be fading any time soon.
Comfortable and classy, this shoe is a great choice for first-time sneaker buyers or even the well seasoned enthusiast. Retailing at a modest $159.95 AUD, you won't even need to break your budget, and you can get a pair of the legendary sneaker now at Sole Finess.
